The NutriMullet: Silly hair, serious food.

On Saturday, July 1, I will be cutting my hair into a mullet that I will keep for 4 days, styled differently each day (I'm still brainstorming here, but things like 'business in the front, Pocahontas in the back'). I will post pictures of the various styles here and on Facebook and Instagram.

While the mullet is silly, the cause is not! As a Registered Dietitian working in a school district in a Boston area suburb,  I am hoping to raise $2500 to support monthly produce tastings, "Farm Fresh Fridays," at each of our four elementary schools. The tastings will include regionally-grown produce, such as cherry tomatoes, delicata squash, kohlrabi, and strawberries when in season. Tastings will be held during lunch service, will be available to all students, regardless of whether or not they purchase lunch. I will work closely with school nurses to consider any food allergies and ensure that students with allergies to any of the offered items do not receive the food(s). Students will have the opportunity to voice their opinions about the offered foods by placing a sticker from their sample cup on a poster with smiley faces representing if they like/dislike the item offered.

Since December 2015 I've run a successful tasting program - "Try Day Fridays" - at one of our elementary schools. (The principal and several students submitted nominations on my behalf for the Massachusetts School Nutrition Association's 2017 School Lunch Hero.) 300+ of the school's 425 students regularly participated in the tastings, including roasted local beets, guacamole, and local golden russet apples. Based on the experience and success of this tasting program, I am confident that we can use this as a model to expand the tastings to all of the district's elementary schools and can source products with traceable origins, within the set budget of $2500.

**Due to the fees associated with online fundraising, I cannot raise money directly on behalf of the school district. The money raised will be for me personally. At the end of the campaign, I will submit the donation received to the school committee. All donations made to my district's schools are subject to approval by the school committee.**
