When 9-year-old Nutmeg arrived at the shelter in July, she was in heartbreaking condition. She was severely dehydrated, covered in flea dirt, and struggling with a nose and eyes coated in bloody, mucus-filled discharge. But the worst of her suffering was hidden inside her mouth. Her gums were severely inflamed, her teeth were badly damaged, and she had extensive resorptive lesions. Even giving her medication caused her mouth to bleed. She was in unimaginable pain. Nutmeg underwent a full-mouth dental extraction, but her battle was far from over.
X-rays revealed buckshot lodged deep inside the left side of her face near her nasal passage. Post dental, she continued to suffer from infections, facial swelling, bloody noses, irritated eyes, difficulty eating, and other serious symptoms. She needed antibiotics, pain medication, nebulizer treatments, and frequent veterinary care.
Eventually, specialists determined that the pellet was harboring infection and preventing her from healing. It had to come out.
Thankfully, the specialists were able to remove it through rhinoscopy—without the extensive surgery we feared might be necessary. ❤️
For the first time in a long time, Nutmeg finally has a real chance to heal.
Her story is a reminder of just how much suffering animals can endure before someone gives them the chance they deserve. Nutmeg came to us sick, painful, and struggling—but she never gave up.
Now it's our turn to fight for her.
