In February 2024, I have an opportunity to travel to Macha, Zambia in Africa with the nursing department at Messiah University. We will be traveling to Macha Mission Hospital and serving alongside African doctors, nurses, and students. The hospital is made up of 208 beds consisting of a male ward, a female ward, a tuberculosis ward, and a pediatric ward. In this region, HIV, tuberculosis, and tropical diseases like malaria are rampant. I am overwhelmed with excitement regarding this opportunity to see my profession in a new light. Over the past five years of nursing school, I have heard so many incredible stories from other students who have served at Macha Mission Hospital. They have been able to assist with delivering babies, surgery in the operating room, pediatric will checks in the community, and general care of the patients in the hospital wards. The academic purpose of this trip is to learn how the staff manages their resources to provide quality care to their patients. As a nursing student, I will also learn community and population health management skills for high-risk environments, something that is not often experienced in the US. I would greatly appreciate your support both financially and in prayer as my cohort and I travel to Zambia.
