Nugget's unexpected last journey

Words cannot describe how Nugget changed our lives. Never could we imagine: a healthy, young, loved, happy and energetic dog just 1yr 10mos old suddenly falling sick and having his body collapse on him. He had no previous symptoms or injuries. As parents of this amazing little dog, we are in shock and disbelief at how early he was taken from us.

Thanks in advance for reading Nugget's story!
Our world turned upside down in just 5 days...

Day 1: Nugget started to hack/cough and throw up some food and liquids. Still walking around, playing and excited when we came home. The throwing up continued throughout the night mostly of liquids.

Day 2: Nugget was taken to the Animal Hospital for treatment and was discharged with some antibiotics and nausea medications. He continues to throw up liquids and any water we gave him for hydration. By now he was getting a little sluggish and tired. He didn't come to the door when we came home. He wouldn't take any food, not even his favorite treats.

Day 3: Throughout the day, Nugget continues to throw up and could not hold down any food, water or medication. He started to hide in places he never did before, almost like he was afraid of what was going on with his body. Nugget continues to throw up yellow bile, white foam and water... he now started to have tremors and episodes of muscle spasm in legs. We tried to give him some water through a straw since he wouldn't drink on his own. The doctor suggested he was dehydrated from vomiting.

Day 4: There were more throw-up yellow spots on the carpet and his tremors and muscle spasm had gotten worse, now spreading to his head. We took him back to the Animal Hospital. Nugget was immediately placed on IV fluids, more antibiotics and got blood work.
A few hours later, as we were wrapping Christmas presents, the doctor called. We got the worse phone call a dog parent can have. The doctor said "Nugget's blood work showed he is at LEVEL 4 KIDNEY FAILURE" We are dumbfounded...What, how and why is this happening? We scramble to figure out what might have happened but nothing came up. Unexpectedly we had to hospitalize him to continue fluid & antibiotic treatment to get him to stabilize.

Christmas Eve. evening we had to transfer Nugget to the 24hr Emergency Clinic and he was put under intensive care for more tests, labs and treatments.
For more than 24 hours, Nugget has been through multiple antibiotics and tests. However, no solutions or specific causes. When he was supposed to be with his family enjoying Christmas, he had to be all alone in the ER hooked up to IVs fighting for his life.

Day 5: Christmas Day, we received a call from the ER doctor and were told lab results were worse and he is not getting any better. Nugget was not having any positive reactions to the treatments. The realization that Nugget might not get through this hit us in the gut, hard! Our main focus was to figure out what's wrong, get him to stabilize and keep him comfortable.

After 2 nights in the ER, we picked him up to transfer him back to his vet. The image of how he looked will forever haunt us. He had lost weight, his eyes glazed over and extremely weak. We were told he was having a hard time breathing. As we carried him to his Vet, he was trying to breathe through his mouth and trembling.

We had X-Rays taken for Nugget and it now shows he has fluids in his stomach. How or Why!? The doctor had a long list of suspicion but cannot figure out the main causes without more extensive lab work, more hospitalization, more fluids, and more days in discomfort. Even with that, Nugget's internal organs functions are declining by the hour...

The doctor confirmed that Nugget's kidney would never function normally again and it was just a matter of time. Whatever was attacking his body was rapidly deteriorating his health. Nugget's beady little eyes looked at us helplessly. The doctor gave us the option of euthanasia to help him rest at ease and end his suffering.

The unimaginable decision that we tried to avoid was right in front of us. As responsible dog parents, we considered all possible options for him and possible outcomes that will affect him. As heart-wrenching as the decision is, with the consults of 2 doctors, we had to let our baby boy Nugget go...

Nugget was an extremely loveable dog and he was torn apart from us unbelievably soon!
We set up this GoFund Me not only to raise funds to help with Nugget's medical bills in his final journey but also to raise awareness for every dog parent out there. Besides the emotional heartbreak, there are endless unexpected medical bills that most people are not ready for when it comes to unexpected illnesses/injuries.

In Nugget's memory, with our reached goal we plan to donate a portion of our proceeds to a local animal charity to help families and their dogs in their time of need.

We are deeply touched by all of our friend's and families support.
We really appreciate your time to listen to Nugget's last journey.
Rest in heaven our Golden Nugget.
