Hi my name is Debbie green and I want to share a heartbreaking story with the world about my precious 20 year old son Derek Nino green. He has been battling aggressive glioblastoma stage 4 brain cancer since April 2014 at the young age of 18. We were on a family vacation when we found this out. Derek was getting sick on the plane ride to Florida and for 2 days after we arrived was sick in bed sensitive to light and sound. We had plans at Cocoa Beach and disney which didn't happen. It was Derek, myself, my husband and my grandson off to Florida for fun. When he couldnt get out of bed i decided to take him to the emergency room because Derek complained of a headache the doctor ordered a cat scan. Not long after the scan the doctor came back in with the most devastating news you could imagine. They suspected brain cancer. Derek was immediately transported to Melbourne Florida where he underwent 6hr brain surgery on April 15th 2014. Our lives have been so sad and difficult each and every day. Derek had a baseball sized tumor in his front right temporal lobe. He was so brave and unaware of the severity of this horrible disease. The surgeon was hopeful until the pathology results came back on April 24th confirming Derek had glioblastoma multiforme which usually has a 15 month survival rate. He pretty much said go home and live everyday like its your last how do you do this? We were so numb with our hearts all just broken. We cried, prayed and held each other all so close. We waited for Nino to recover enough to make the drive home to New York and meet with his doctor to help us help our son survive. We made arrangements to go to Roswell Park Cancer Institute and met with dr. Metchler a neuro oncologist who seemed a bit more optimistic than the past surgeon. On Mother's Day May 2014 Nino started his first round of chemotherapy and the next day started six and a half weeks of radiation Monday through Friday. He lost his hair felt nauseous, weak and tired through this he smiles and fights so hard. So sad and unfair to see your child go through this. He's so young and beautiful it breaks our hearts. He's not out enjoying life like a 20 year old should be he used to hunt and ride dirt bikes and four wheelers and now barely feels like doing anything. He loves football and basketball the Buffalo Bills are his absolute favorite he has gone to two home games this year. Derek did his radiation and 14 months of chemotherapy we all thought it was working until June of 2015 when his MRI shows something wasn't right. he underwent his second brain surgery July 21st to remove another tumor along with radiation damage. He fights so hard every day to win this battle unbelievable this could happen to my baby. I feel so helpless I'm supposed to protect him. I have a picture in my house that says live every moment laugh everyday love with no regrets. I would do anything or go anywhere to save my sons life. He is on two different chemos now 1 a pill and the other an iv injection every two weeks there is a lot of serious side effects with these we're hoping and praying every day they work and don't make him too sick. He lost 4 pounds last week and his appetite is not good. He's been wanting a jet tub to relax and when he's not feeling well we went for a loan for an addition because our home is small and wanted to give nino a bigger room of his own with a handicap accessible bathroom but was turned down because of our homes current square footage if this makes any sense?? Nothing matters anymore but to help my son we want him to be happy and comfortable while he continues to fight this horrible battle. I've never been the asking type but I need to do this so I have no regrets maybe with this fund Nino can get his jet tub a new vacation to Disney or anything to help him and keep that beautiful smile shining. Please help in any way you can along with happy thoughts and prayers would be greatly appreciated thank you and God bless you we will continue to post Dereks progress and treatment results.
