Mauri is a 35-year-old solo parent of a teen. Mauri has a range of disabling health conditions that make their days incredibly challenging & greatly reduces their quality of life by leaving them cause layers of pain/discomfort, leaving them with few usable hours each day.

 

Mauri’s most common daily symptoms include: seizure-like neurological episodes, cognitive issues, dizziness, weakness, heart palpitations, treatment-resistant migraine, nausea/vomiting, extreme light & sound sensitivity, nerve pain, throat swelling/anaphylaxis, full body shut down after eating, muscular & skeletal pain, weakness, infections, chronic fatigue, hot flushing, fever/chills, rashes, intense GI distress, rapid unintentional weight loss, and an increase of mental health issues brought on by the physical distress and the stress of managing healthcare while prioritizing care of their teen.

 

These illnesses make it impossible for Mauri to work and take care of their basic needs of daily living without support. Multi-layered pains paired with thick brain fog/confusion makes it difficult to leave the bed or the house many days and Mauri can rarely access screens now. On most days, Mauri needs support to get through the day. In Spring 2021, Mauri had to make the incredibly difficult decision to leave their secure public health job of five years without any guaranteed financial security.

 

A major cause of these challenges is that Mauri discovered that the apartment they had lived in for almost 3 years, including 24/7 during the initial quarantine year, had hidden toxic mold due to landlord negligence. They moved out immediately after it was found and had to replace many costly belongings due to invasive mold spores. The mold exposure triggered the series of underlying conditions that Mauri’s doctors have yet to fully uncover and that science is still uncovering.

The exposure continues to impact their everyday quality of life and make activities of daily living challenging. Funds will help Mauri pay bills to rebuild some credit after it has dipped due to health expenses not covered by insurance thus far. 

 

Although they have basic health coverage through the state, much of the necessary care and treatments for Lyme and mold detox are not covered or are expensive compounded medications. Mauri is in the process of applying for disability to support them; however, this is a long process (now the longest wait times ever due to the pandemic) and this amount won't cover their basic daily treatment. The vast majority of disability applications are denied the first time and it will require a disability attorney to appeal the decision.

 

While Mauri decides on the best route for safer housing, waits for the disability process and talks to doctors about the next steps in an intensive treatment process, they need financial support. Mauri would feel deeply supported & encouraged by any amounts and/or encouraging words of hope you can comfortably share. Donations would allow this family to access more nourishing rest & calm, which providers keep reminding them is key to their healing. Mauri sees their carers and some friends but being immunocompromised & already severely ill in a pandemic, Mauri does not have access to broader in-person support networks & care options.
