On May 7th , 2019, 900 students and staff at York Memorial Collegiate Institute
(otherwise known as Memo) were forced to evacuate due to a devastating fire that broke out within the school. With part of the roof and floor collapsed, students have been unable to return to the building, which was set to celebrate its 90th anniversary in the month that the fire took place. Along with personal items that were left behind, nearly a century of historic memorabilia was lost forever, including countless irreplaceable photographs and plaques that celebrated the rich history of the neighbourhood.
Some of our own were once part of this now displaced group; NST
co-founder William Nguyen
, and family friend and close collaborator Kelsey “Killa Kels” Williams
. It's only right to now return to the community that raised us and help how we can.
On Sunday, September 8, NST, alongside Memo alumni Killa Kels, Xavier Pierre, Hangaelle, and Tabby Donaldson held a fundraising event at Cold Tea
in Toronto, ON. Proceeds from the event will be allocated to helping to replace any materials, equipment, and supplies, mainly personal, that were destroyed in the fire, as Memo students have been relocated to Scarlett Heights, a school that was shut down due to low enrollment until recently. We have also set up this GoFundMe page for those who could not join us at the event or wish to donate additionally.
Every dollar and share counts towards getting the students and staff of Memo back what they need to continue learning. We’re hoping to build on the extreme generosity of others in Toronto who have already given an incredible amount of time, energy, and money to do exactly that. Part of this will include an intimate performance from JUNO-nominated and platinum recording artist Anders , a set from Killa Kels, and a dance performance from celebrity choreographer Tabby ‘Rockstar’ Donaldson for the students and staff of Memo at a future date
, because rebuilding morale is also a big part of this campaign.
To all those who will donate, thank you in advance.
