Maverick Healey

Maverick John Healey took his final rest in the arms of his loving parents on June 27th, 2023 at Mercy Hospital. Maverick was born on December 16th, 2022 to Leeanna and Brendan Healey in Iowa City at the University of Iowa Hospital.

Maverick didn’t have the easiest start to life, he was a fighter and a strong brave baby since birth. Maverick was born with a condition called Gastroschisis. His first surgery was on the same day of his birth December 16th, 2022. Maverick stayed in the NICU at the University of Iowa in Iowa City for 5 months. While he stayed in the NICU he would get lab work, blood tests, eye exams, x-rays, dialysis, IV infusions, therapy, transfusions, wound care, phototherapy, respiratory support, NG tubing, Echocardiogram and so much more. Maverick experienced so much at such an early time in his life but he fought every day and made it through every battle god gave him. Maverick also had a PICC line in his left leg which is a catheter for IV fluids, antibiotics, nutrients and other medication, and blood draws. During his second surgery for the removal of his PICC line, it broke into three pieces in his vein and two weren't able to be removed. After a couple of weeks, he had a third surgery to remove the other two pieces, but they could only remove one piece and one was still unable to be removed. Instead of keeping a PICC line in his leg, they placed a Broviac catheter into the right side of his chest that led straight into the superior vena cava. It had the same purpose as the PICC line but could stay in place for months up to years. His NG tubing was also in place in his nose for feedings and fiber. Each day we would make a trip up to the University of Iowa and go visit Maverick and pray for him when we weren’t with him. We took classes and had training on how to care for him and his health needs while he was at home. On April 11th, 2023 we were finally able to bring him home from the NICU. He still had his Broviac and his ng tubing as we would need to place him on his vitamins and fats through his Broviac. He would stay on his lines for 18 hours each day and need his dressing changed once a week which we would take care of.

Even though Maverick only spent a short amount of time with us, he was immensely loved and brought so much joy and happiness to those around him. That’s all the time he needed to change the lives of those he touched. His presence, laughter, smile, and light will be missed more than his parents have the words to describe. Maverick will forever be cherished loved and remembered. Maverick is survived and lovingly remembered by his parents, Leeanna and Brendan; maternal grandmother, Joette L. Pierce of Marion; paternal grandparents, Candy L. Hoag of Dubuque, Iowa and John L. Healey of Decorah, Iowa; maternal great-grandparents, Debbie Pierce of Marion and Ray (Arielle) Pierce of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; and paternal great grandparents, Nancy Hoag of Dubuque and Ron (Jean Steffen) Healey of Dubuque and extended family members.
