I am creating this page for my special friend, Janie Waskiewicz who was recently diagnosed with breast cancer at age 45.
As a friend of the Waskiewiczes for over 40 years, never would I have imagined what this family would face once cancer hit. First, Janie’s mom, Karen underwent treatment for stage 4 breast cancer; surviving 14 years before she passed in 2006. Dick, Janie’s dad, was diagnosed with advanced prostate cancer just 2 months after Karen passed. He survived 5 years. Two years after that in 2013, Kristen, Janie’s sister had a double mastectomy and reconstruction surgery at age 46 for her breast cancer. Within several months, Rich, Janie’s brother had surgery at age 48 for his diagnosed prostate cancer. Kristen and Rich are both healthy and cancer free. Now, two years later, Janie has been diagnosed with invasive ductal carcinoma and is scheduled for both a double mastectomy and reconstructive surgery on December 21st, just days before Christmas. How can it be that 5 out of the 6 family members face their own cancer in such a short span of time? While grieving the loss of their parents, Rich, Kristen and Janie have had to deal with their own health issues. Luckily, all 4 kids and their families are extremely close and supportive of one another. Karen and Dick would be so proud of how they hang together so tightly.
As you know, Janie is single and her income will be dramatically reduced. She will be out of work while she recovers from her double mastectomy. The extensive reconstruction process will also continue to greatly affect her ability to support herself. She will be unable to maintain a normal work schedule throughout this time. It is unknown when Janie will begin working full time, yet she will continue to have her monthly household expenses as well as travel and medical expenses. I hope to help lift some of the financial burden her cancer has caused so she can focus on her physical and emotional recovery.
It was extremely difficult for Janie to agree to a “GOFUNDME” page. The reality is, many people want to do something and this is one way you can help ease the financial stress Janie is enduring.
