Riley’s Recovery

Riley had a stroke on Wednesday, November 11th. I was taking him to the hospital for a headache and dizziness when he started showing signs of a stroke. I called 911 and an ambulance met us at Wapella. At that point, they assessed him and decided Yorkton was the destination. When he arrived in Yorkton, he was intubated and sedated so they could take him for a CT scan and chest xray. The CT scan showed a clot in the basal artery in his brain. Riley was given TPA to break up the clot. He was transferred by air ambulance to Royal University Hospital in Saskatoon. He was then admitted and because he could not answer the Covid screening questions (as he was sedated) he was treated as a presumed positive case until he could be swabbed and tested. He was in triage while they assessed him and the severity of the clot. Another CT scan showed this was successful. Later in the nigh5, his tube was removed and he was responsive. The neurologists that saw him said these are all good signs. He was then moved into a single Emerg room where he could be monitored. He was very sleepy, a side effect of the sedation and the type of stroke he had as it affected his thalmus. He was mostly able to respond to the neurology assessment which required him to open his eyes, squeeze his hands, wiggle his toes, and do some anti-gravity tests wth his legs. He was able to do all of the tasks but struggled with opening his eyes. He was complaining that his vision was blurry and he preferred his eyes closed. Thursday morning he had another Covid test, at which time he became quite alert. He was talking and was hard to hear but was mostly coherent. He could squeeze hands and wiggle his toes, and was able to eventually open his eyes. He has mobility in his limbs but due to his stroke, they want him to stay put. He was cracking some jokes before I had to leave, so while it is a terrible situation it seems like things are going as good as they could. Thanks to Covid, support persons are not allowed in the Emerg department so I had to leave. Later Thursday, he was transferred to another ward while they await his Covid test. If the results come back negative, he will move to the neurology ward where they will assess if any more clots can occur and why they happened in the first place, as he is a healthy, young man. We have some hard work ahead of us and are not sure if Riley will have full mobility and such, but things seem hopeful and we are and have been receiving incredible care at all facilities.

We don't need anything at this time but your support. Please keep us in your thoughts and prayers, hug your loved ones, and learn how to watch for signs of a stroke (F.A.S.T). Oh, and wear your goddamned mask so we can visit Riley in the hospital.
