In the foothills of the Hindukush Mountain in Afghanistan, the weather is getting increasingly cold. Since the Fall of Kabul in August 2021, the situation in Afghanistan has grown dire. Food is scarce in Kabul and the provinces, and many are at risk of famine as people of Afghanistan are trapped between the Taliban and the sanctioning policies of the US and EU, We might be able to temporarily provide relief to some families through the winter until there is an opening for more substantial change.

I spent over a year in Afghanistan in 2018-2019 conducting field research in the country. While living there, I made many friends. Some of those friends were able to leave the country after the Taliban tookover last August. Many, however, remained or got stuck in the country. I am afraid of opening my messages from friends in Kabul as it is distressing to hear and read what they have to tell me about life currently in Kabul. One of these trusted friends, whom I'll call M.A., is helping distribute urgent relief among relatives and neighbors in need as well as some families in provinces.

Our goal is to provide food and heat (wood/coal) to keep these families fed and warm in the winter. I have asked my friend, M.A., to provide a price list for some of the main food items as they are currently priced in Kabul (you can see the list below).
I can reassure you that this money does not go to anyone’s salary, any paperwork, or fee. Each dollar is directly going towards buying food and heating for the winter. Just to get the scale, a 100-dollar contribution helps a family of six or seven survive for the winter. Even a 20-dollar contribution goes a long way. Donations of any amount make a real difference.
$1 2 lb. of Rice
$1 4 lb. of Flour
$1 1.5 lb. of lentils or beans
$1 8 lb. of Potato
$1 3 lb. of Tomato
$1 16 lb. of Coal
$1.5 One bottle of oil
Another great way to help is by asking your friends and family to contribute. Please feel free to share on social media or through email.
Thanks for your support and helping these families in need.
