My husband Albert deGrasse is a social studies teacher from New York City. Starting on the 4th of July, 2026 - America's 250th birthday - he embarks on a year-long challenge to relearn America. He's doing it the best way he knows how: one golf course, one community, and one conversation at a time.

With your help, Albert will board a camper van and spend 365 days playing golf on 365 courses in all 50 states. Along the way, he'll also visit historic and cultural sites important to the American story. Everywhere he goes, he will meet diverse Americans and hear their stories about teachers who've changed their lives and what this nation means to them.

He's excited to chronicle the journey via social media, including weekly "Field Trips": YouTube videos that capture the most inspiring images, stories, and wisdom from the road that week. We especially hope this content gets to schools across America. At the conclusion on July 4, 2027, he'll be ready to re-enter the classroom with fresh ideas, renewed energy and a clearer picture of our complex, beautiful nation.

An odyssey like this is only possible with your support. Most of the golf courses on his list are municipal and military courses, and his compact camper van is partly powered by solar. Still, the cost of the van, meals, golf fees, tech, gas, tolls, internet and flights (no other way to hit Alaska and Hawaii) - it all adds up, especially for a schoolteacher and his priest-wife, who will cheer from their new home in San Francisco.
