Noto Peninsula earthquake Japan 2024

Hello Everyone, this is Mayu from Japan

I hope this message finds you well. I wanted to bring to your attention the recent Noto earthquake that occurred on January 1, 2024, at 16:10. A magnitude 7.6 earthquake impacted the Noto Peninsula in Ishikawa Prefecture, Japan. In response to this unfortunate event, I've created this page with the hope of seeking your kind assistance.

I'm originally from Tokyo, but my grandparents reside in the town of Suzu in Ishikawa Prefecture. Suzu was severely affected by the recent earthquake. Their home and car were both destroyed, and as of now, they are receiving shelter in an evacuation center at a local elementary school (as of January 4, 2024). Winters in the Noto region can be quite cold, sometimes dropping below freezing.

I'm particularly worried about my 81-year-old grandmother, who underwent heart surgery three years ago. In this recent earthquake, she was trapped in her home, we've just discovered that she has a cracked rib. Despite being generally lively, she appears significantly weakened, causing serious concern for her health.

In fact, a significant earthquake also occurred in May 2023. We considered moving then, but due to their advanced age, my grandparents chose to continue living in their familiar surroundings. The previous earthquake required around ¥5 million(〜$50,000) for roof repairs, and considering the assistance received at that time was only a fraction of the total cost, we anticipate that there will be substantial expenses this time as well. With both the house and car now lost, there is no choice left but for them to relocate.

I am currently in Australia and am unfortunately unable to directly assist my grandparents. Understanding how difficult the situation is, I reach out to seek your support in the process of rebuilding their lives. Would you be so kind as to lend your assistance for my grandparents' future? We would graciously appreciate any assistance you are able to provide and sharing of this page and awareness on the disaster that has occured with others around you. Thank you very much.
