Notes for Nichole

Life can change in a heartbeat… and unfortunately, it’s not always for the better.

On Friday, August 5, 2022, my sister Nichole was diagnosed with a ‚rare and aggressive soft-tissue cancer' (Rhabdomyosarcoma). She had gone months fighting through extensive back, shoulder and neck pain and had countless appointments with general physicians, chiropractors, massage and physical therapists, and nothing gave her relief. Last week as she was doubled over in pain, she begged a doctor not to send her home and well, she’s been there ever since. Let’s call it a blessing in disguise.

After several tests, ultrasounds and an MRI, the doctors discovered a 4-inch tumor on her spinal cord. In addition, her lungs were filled with fluid, which at this point have been drained of almost 4 liters. Due to the tumor's size, location and severity of cancer, they have already begun administering chemo. This is only a very brief description of what Nichole has been through this week… simply the waiting itself and being away from her three children was a lot to handle.

Although Nichole (36) is younger than I, she is someone I (if not many) have always admired. Aside from her stunning beauty, she is one of the hardest workers and best moms I know. When she’s not taking clients in her shop (Beauty Edit in Cedar Rapids, Iowa), she’s spending evenings in the tractor helping her husband on their family farm. Most weekends are spent traveling across Iowa to help brides feel their best on their wedding day. Her main priority, however, is her three children, James (9), Eliza (4) and Margaret (3). Sound exhausting? Nope, not for Nichole… these are the things she truly loves doing, being the best advisor, mentor, friend, sister, daughter, wife and mother. She is one of the few (in my experience) who lives out the saying ‚Life is simply too short not to do what you love.'

Yes, life is too short. Even for those who get to a ripe old age of 100, life is simply too short. And though it comes with its challenges, it still can be wonderful. She learned that hard lesson in 2014, when her second son, Thomas, passed away after spending only 28 days on Earth. A nightmare that no parent should have to endure. I believe, however, that it gave Nichole a whole new perspective on life and unmatchable strength. Sometimes she just needs to be reminded of it.

So yeah, she’s been through a lot. And if I can do anything to help, I’m right there with her. Want to join us?

The situation is still very fresh, and many questions remain unanswered. However, the costs for Nichole and her family continue to pile up. Therefore, to relieve some of the financial burdens they will endure, we have decided to start this GoFundMe page. Your donations, no matter how big or small will go towards the costs of extensive hospital stays, chemotherapy, gas and other essential items her and her family might need.

Thank you so much for reading Nichole’s story. Any note of encouragement or small donation would be greatly appreciated.
