Help Luther Fight for His Life
Hi, my name is Rima. I am raising funds for my childhood best friend, Gaby, and her beloved dog, Luther, named after her favorite singer, Luther Vandross.
Luther is an 8-year-old Cocker Spaniel mix with the sweetest personality. Whether you are a familiar face or a stranger, he greets you with a wagging tail and wet kisses. I call him “Loaf” because when his fur is shaved, he looks like a chonky loaf of bread, perfect for pets and belly rubs.
The Scare That Changed Everything
A week ago, Luther suddenly became very sick. He had bloody stool, and the vet discovered internal bleeding. His platelet count, which helps the blood clot, was almost zero. Steroid treatment did not help. Luther stopped eating, and the vet told Gaby to prepare for the worst.
That day, we took him to the park, thinking it might be goodbye. But when he saw me, his tail still wagged. I told Gaby, "Not today. We should still fight for him."
A Second Opinion and a Second Chance
We went to a VCA Hospital, where the vet offered more testing and treatment, including a blood transfusion. Just three days later, Luther was discharged with a diagnosis: Immune-Mediated Thrombocytopenia. This autoimmune disease destroys platelets and causes dangerous bleeding.
His platelet count is still low. He will need ongoing medication and possibly more treatment, but he is back in Gaby’s arms and still fighting.
Why I Am Asking for Help
Luther’s care came with high, unexpected costs. I am starting this fundraiser to help Gaby with the bills so she can focus on keeping him healthy.
Gaby has been my best friend since childhood and is like my sister. She is my emergency contact, my personal therapist (and a real one in her career), and one of the most caring people I know. Now it is my turn to be there for her.
How You Can Help
If you have ever loved a pet, you know how scary it is when they are sick. Luther’s fight is not over, and we believe he is not ready to leave us.
Any amount will make a difference. Even sharing this page helps more than you know.
Thank you for reading and for supporting Luther’s fight,
Rima
