'Not A Good Person', written and directed by Madeline McLaughlin.
This film centers on a friendship break-up between Ben (Davis Cowart) and Blair (TBD) and its impact on their larger friend group. ‘Not A Good Person’ is a film told in 5 chapters. The film's chapters chart each step in the disintegration of the main characters' friendship, told through Ben's emotions: denial, more denial, anger, sadness and End-Times (and/or acceptance, depending on your perspective.) This film stars Davis Cowart, Joe Schwalb, Aaron Gonner, Trisha Pickelhaupt and Marshall Joun.

What does the movie feel like?
"It's 'The Big Chill' meets 'Frances Ha'." — Cast Member, Aaron Gonner. It's the kind of bittersweet, funny, observational hang out movie you watch with friends on a rainy day with all the best comfort snacks and wine and maybe gossip a little about your friends/ex-roommates/old high school friends that weren't always the easiest to deal with (in a mature and clever way, of course...)
How are we making it?
In December 2023 we filmed part one of five with a very scrappy budget. We're raising funds to now film part two (still on a budget!)
Why this film?
In my writing, I try to look for gaps in what stories are being told. I search for the stories I want to see and what can inspire me. For this script, I did not have to search very far. Many of us have gone through friendship break-ups, but it’s not often given the emotional weight it deserves in media. Friendship break-ups can be just as, if not more, painful as romantic relationships, and are worth being reflected in art and media. I’ve experienced my own friendship break-ups, as have many of the people involved with this film. They’re painful and often leave us wondering— Am I not a good friend? Not a good person? It’ll make anyone’s head spin and I thought a very complex (but not actually too complicated) subject to explore.
Talk about the budget:
We're filming the five chapters of this film as five short films— this helps cut down costs, and allows for us to budget efficiently. With more time to prep and plan for each shoot, we're able to save money and use the budget wisely. 65% of our budget will be going to our amazing cast and crew while the other 35% will go towards transportation, supplies, food, and locations.
