Liebe Chorfreunde,

In Vorbereitung auf unser nachgeholtes fünfzehn jähriges Chorjubiläum (2020 konnten wir leider nicht mit euch feiern) sowie zur Feier des letzten Konzerts mit unserem langjährigen Chorleiter Jaret Choolun, möchten wir noch vor dem Jubiläums- und Abschiedskonzert am 2. Juli im Sendesaal unser zweites Northern Spirit Album produzieren. Obwohl wir das Glück hatten, für die Aufnahme der Stücke die Förderung des Neustart Amateurmusik Programms zu erhalten, können wir leider die Fertigung der CDs nicht stemmen. Da unsere Finanzen sich nach drei langen Corona-Jahren ohne nennenswerte Einnahmen nur langsam erholen, wenden wir uns an euch, damit die Produktion der CD zum Jubiläumskonzert gelingen kann.

Hello choir friends,

To commemorate Northern Spirit’s 15 year anniversary (rescheduled from 2020) as well as director Jaret Choolun’s final concert with the choir on 2nd July, we are currently preparing to record our 2nd CD at the Bremen Sendesaal. While we were fortunate to acquire generous funding through Neustart Amateurmusik to pay our sound technician as well as the rental of the Bremen Sendesaal, the costs of the production of the CD itself are not covered. Building our finances back up after three years of almost no concert income is taking a long time, so to produce this CD in time for release at our celebration concert we are turning to you, our community, for help.

Northern Spirit wurde 2006 von dem australischen Komponisten und Dirigenten Gordon Hamilton gegründet, dessen musikalische Wurzeln bis heute den unverwechselbaren Stil, den musikalischen Anspruch und das Repertoire des Chores beeinflussen.

Dabei pflegt der Chor einen regen internationalen Austausch mit anderen Chören und arbeitet stets an der Erweiterung seines Repertoires. Konzert-Tourneen führten den Chor bereits nach Spanien, Frankreich, England, Island, Dänemark, Schweden und Australien. Außerdem nahm der Chor in den letzten Jahren an Festivals und Wettbewerben in Bethlehem und Ramallah, Krakau und Riga teil.

Seit 2012 wird der Chor, nach Gordon Hamiltons Rückkehr nach Brisbane und einer kurzen Übergangsphase, erneut von einem Australischen Komponisten geleitet. Jaret Choolun, selbst langjähriges Mitglied der weltweit erfolgreichen Australian Voices, die nun von Hamilton geleitet werden, erneuerte und vertiefte die musikalische Verwurzelung des Chores in der zeitgenössischen australischen Chormusik. Er erweiterte Repertoire und Klangwelt des Chores mit zahlreichen eigenen Kompositionen, die oft klassische und zeitgenössische Elemente verbinden. Außerdem förderte er die Zusammenarbeit des Chores mit internationalen jungen Komponisten.

Chooluns ambitionierte Arbeit mit den 20 jungen Sängerinnen und Sängern trugen in den letzten Jahren merklich Früchte. 2015 nahm Northern Spirit erfolgreich am internationalen Chorfestival in Krakau teil. Es folgte ein großartiges Jubiläumskonzert zum zehnjährigen Bestehen des Chores im November 2016. Und schließlich konnte Northern Spirit bei den dritten European Choir Games Riga 2017 sowohl in der Kategorie Kammerchor als auch im übereuropäischen Grand Prix of Nations die internationale Jury überzeugen und wurde mit zwei Goldmedaillen belohnt. Der Chor beschloss das Jahr 2017 mit den Aufnahmen zu seiner ersten Studio CD im Bremer Sendesaal.

Nach dem großen Erfolg der ersten CD nahm Northern Spirit im Winter 2019 die ersten Stücke für eine nächste CD auf. Die Aufnahmen sollten im Jahr 2020 fortgesetzt werden, mussten jedoch aufgrund der Pandemie bis auf Weiteres auf Eis gelegt werden. Ebenso konnte das Deutsche Chorfest in Leipzig mit zugehörigem Wettbewerb im Mai 2020 nicht stattfinden, bei dem Northern Spirit in den Kategorien Zeitgenössische Chormusik in moderner Tonsprache, Folklore/Weltmusik sowie Uraufführung Volkliedsatz antreten wollte. Beides soll im Jahr 2022 nachgeholt werden.

Die Besonderheit des Chores ist die Variabilität der Klangfarben, eine große Flexibilität in der Dynamik und die Fähigkeit, klassische sowie zeitgenössische Musik stets kreativ zu interpretieren.

Northern Spirit was founded in 2006 by Australian composer and conductor Gordon Hamilton, whose musical roots continue to influence the choir's distinctive style, musical aspirations and repertoire.

The choir maintains a lively international exchange with other choirs and is constantly working to expand its repertoire. Concert tours have already taken the choir to Spain, France, England, Iceland, Denmark, Sweden and Australia. In addition, the choir has taken part in festivals and competitions in Bethlehem and Ramallah, Krakow and Riga in recent years.

Since 2012, following Gordon Hamilton's return to Brisbane and a short transition period, the choir has once again been directed by an Australian composer. Jaret Choolun, himself a long-time member of the globally successful Australian Voices, now led by Hamilton, renewed and deepened the choir's musical roots in contemporary Australian choral music. He expanded the choir's repertoire and sound world with numerous original compositions, often combining classical and contemporary elements. He also encouraged the choir's collaboration with international young composers.

Choolun's ambitious work with the 20 young singers bore noticeable fruit in recent years. In 2015, Northern Spirit successfully participated in the international choir festival in Krakow. This was followed by a magnificent anniversary concert celebrating the choir's tenth anniversary in November 2016. And finally, at the third European Choir Games Riga 2017, Northern Spirit was able to convince the international jury in both the chamber choir category and the supra-European Grand Prix of Nations and was rewarded with two gold medals. The choir concluded 2017 with the recording of its first studio CD in Bremen's Sendesaal.

After the great success of the first CD, Northern Spirit recorded the first pieces for a next CD in winter 2019. The recordings were to be continued in 2020, but had to be put on hold until further notice due to the pandemic. Likewise, the German Choral Festival in Leipzig with the associated competition in May 2020, in which Northern Spirit wanted to compete in the categories of contemporary choral music in a modern idiom, folklore/world music and world premiere of folk songs, could not take place. Both are to be made up for in 2022.

The special feature of the choir is the variability of the sound colours, a great flexibility in dynamics and the ability to always interpret classical as well as contemporary music creatively.
