North Herts To South Kent Cycling Challenge

Hi, my name is Zach. During the Easter holidays of 2023, I cycled from North Hertfordshire to South Kent, as a personal challenge, but also as my main fundraiser to go on a trip with my school.
Any money raised above my initial target of £540 will go to 3rd Hitchin Scouts.
This project is to raise money for two causes:
- The first and main cause is to help fund an educational trip to Costa Rica with my school. The once-in-a-lifetime trip will take place during the Easter break of 2024, exactly one year after I did my cycle ride!
- The second cause that the money raised will go to is the 3rd Hitchin Scouts, a group that I recently left to go to Explorers. I found that after so many years, so many lessons learned and memories made, it’s time to give back to them.
The bike ride itself started in my hometown of Hitchin, in North Hertfordshire, and followed numerous Sustrans routes down to the retirement home of Robert Baden-Powell, the founder of Scouting, in Folkestone, South Kent. The route was around 200 miles and took four days and three nights, at a pace of approximately 50 miles a day. This challenge took me out of my comfort zone because the furthest I cycled in one day previously was 23 miles!
We decided to cycle to the West of London - through Windsor - and then South towards the coast. After hitting the coast in Shoreham, we cycled East through Brighton, Eastbourne and Bexhill. One final push on the last day took us through Hastings, Rye and Hythe before we finally made it to Milden House in Folkestone, which acted as our finish line.
Along the route, we visited and stayed with three Scout groups and met some of their Scouts. I'm very grateful to all of the groups that kindly opened their doors to me for a night. The groups are:
- 7th Old Windsor Scout Group, Old Windsor
- 1st St. Leonard's Forest Scout Group, Horsham
- 9th Bexhill Scout Group, Bexhill-on-sea
