North Bend Crew Permas, Anchor Hardware, and Misc
Donation protected
Hello everyone,
I'm Trevor, a committed developer at the climbing areas in North Bend. Over the past few years, my friends and I have poured our hearts into establishing and rebolting well over 100 routes in North Bend. Personally, I've taken on the task of replacing 150 bolts, ensuring safety and longevity in our beloved climbing areas. If you've ever climbed at Amazonia, Overhaul, Canopy, the Actual Cave, World Wall 2, Helms, Crag of the 20s, the Woods, Windfall, or Pratt, chances are you've benefited from some of the bolts we've installed.
Route development is undoubtedly an investment, both in terms of time and resources. Last year alone, I invested approximately $4.50 per bolt and hanger, placing around 350 bolts. However, what truly drives up the costs are the expenses associated with route conveniences. Anchor hardware, especially for lower-offs, can be quite pricey, sometimes reaching up to $30 depending on the situation. Additionally, there are miscellaneous expenses such as providing brushes for climbers, purchasing glue, tools for trail building, and covering the costs of broken drills from our rebolting efforts.
Moreover, we're dedicated to enhancing accessibility and safety by installing perma-draws on steep climbs. Each perma-draw may cost around $15, but they significantly contribute to making challenging routes more approachable for climbers. Last year alone, I hung 80 perma-draws.
Through this GoFundMe campaign, I aim to optimize our resources to strategically distribute lower-offs, perma-draws, and other necessary equipment to the climbs that need them most. Your support will not only help in maintaining the integrity and safety of our climbing routes but also foster a more inclusive and enjoyable climbing experience for our community. Thank you for considering supporting our cause. If there are specific routes you'd like perma-draws on, feel free to message me or include a comment with your donation (I am mostly wanting to offer permas on climbs not at World Wall or Nevermind to better evenly distribute traffic).
Quick FAQs:
What about WARP?
While WARP doesn't provide perma-draws, they do offer replacement bolts and sometimes anchor hardware for old routes. Despite some challenges with rebolting efforts, I'm open to collaborating with ASCA or WARP. However, I'd prefer someone else receive the grant and hardware, and I can assist with the installation. I deeply respect the members of WARP and appreciate their efforts.
What about the land managers?
I've had discussions with a few of them, and their general stance is that if other climbers are onboard with route development, they're happy to remain hands-off.
Can we expect more climbs?
Absolutely! I aim to add a minimum of 50 more routes to Mountain Project, spanning in difficulty from 5.7 to 5.13.
Can we see the new climbing areas?
I'd be delighted to show anyone interested, with the caveat that I expect timeliness. I prefer people explore new, unpublished crags with the crag developer for their safety. Route development in North Bend often results in large and dangerous rockfall.
I'm interested in developing. How do I get involved?
While I've had numerous offers over the years, only a handful of individuals have consistently shown up and become independent developers. I'm efficient, so incorporating new developers generally slows me down. However, I'm open to help, expecting reliability, timeliness, and completion of tasks. To demonstrate seriousness, either clean a climb (like removing moss at Canopy/Gritscone) or hang a rope on something and send me a picture or really bug me to get my attention. I will climb with most anyone.
Where are the new climbs posted?
Generally we post them to our youtube channel S.T.D. Crew first. Eventually all the climbs will end up on mountain project.
We also have a vision for some 200 foot mega climbs, but 20 permadraws for one climb adds up.
