The Ryerson New Media program is celebrating the ongoing contributions of Norman White; artist, instructor and creative visionary through the creation of a new award for our students.
Norm taught with our program for 14 years -- and retired in 2016, to make more art. We have been working on this award since then and are please to now be fund raising!
The Norm White Tangible Media Award will celebrate the student whose work most strongly embodies Norm’s values of exploration, risk-taking, falling down and getting up again.
As many of you know, Norm White is a pioneering Canadian Electronic Media artist. He has used electronics and code as the basis of robotic and light based installation work for nearly 50 years. He taught Tangible Media in the New Media program at Ryerson from 2004-2016. Through his creative work and teaching, Norm has advocated for art as a site of exploration and questioning. Not one to celebrate technology for its own sake, Norm inspired each of us to seek more from the technological spaces in which we are embedded.
The cash award is valued at $750.00 CDN and we plan to offer it annually.
To this end, we are seeking your help in funding this award so that we can ensure this honour carries on in perpetuity. Norm inspired and touched so many of us, as students, artists and colleagues. This award gives each of us the chance to give back.
Norm will join us at Ryerson this November when we honour the first recipient.
