My father, Norm Oberst, co-owned and operated KURY Radio in Brookings, Oregon, for some 35 years. Through his work at KURY—super-serving the community with live and local broadcasts—and through his membership in many local civic groups, including the Jaycees, the Chamber of Commerce, The Rotary Club, and the Elks Club, Dad’s impact on the Brookings-Harbor community was profound.
From the early 60s to the mid-90s, Dad was a mainstay of support for the city’s annual Azalea Festival. KURY was live from events all over town, including Saturday’s keynote presentations at the park’s main stage. In addition to anchoring the live broadcasts, Dad, for many years, also served as presenter of the annual Pioneer Citizen of the Year Award.
Dad passed away on June 4, 2020. In his name and honor, a memorial bench will be installed at Azalea Park near the main stage. We want to open up the funding of the bench to any family or friends who want a chance to honor Dad and be part of a long-lasting memorial at a place so meaningful and important to him and the people of the Brookings-Harbor area.
Thank you very much.
