Door de wereldwijde maatregelen tegen het coronavirus ligt de reisindustrie stil. In Oeganda zijn veel mensen afhankelijk van hun inkomen uit het toerisme. Het lijkt erop dat de situatie niet snel zal verbeteren. Gidsen, chauffeurs en andere medewerkers zijn teruggekeerd naar hun dorpen, in de hoop dat ze daar voedsel kunnen verbouwen om deze moeilijke periode te overbruggen. Door een gebrek aan inkomen hebben zij geen toegang tot basisproducten, zoals rijst, maïsbloem en olie. Maar ook gezondheidszorg kunnen de meeste mensen op dit moment niet betalen.
Met deze actie willen wij onze gidsen en lokale partners steunen, zodat ze zichzelf en hun gezinnen de komende maanden kunnen voeden. Want juist zij maken het mogelijk dat we zulke mooi reizen kunnen maken. Zij staan centraal in ons bedrijf en zetten zich altijd in om onze reizigers de beste ervaring te bezorgen.
Gids David Otto
David Otto is één van de meest ervaren gidsen waar wij mee samenwerken. Hij heeft een groot gevoel voor humor en gasten voelen zich altijd meteen thuis als ze met David op reis gaan. Hij is momenteel terug in zijn geboortedorp, beroofd van een levensonderhoud. David is één van de vele gidsen die op dit moment uw steun goed kan gebruiken, zodat hij ook de komende tijd voedsel op tafel kan zetten.
Zo kun jij helpen
Gidsen, zoals David, en andere medewerkers hebben op dit moment grote behoeften aan basisproducten, zoals rijst, maïsmeel en olie en aan financiële middelen om gezondheidszorg te kunnen betalen. Tot voor kort waren ze zelfredzaam, maar bij gebrek aan een sociaal vangnet vanuit de overheid, zijn ze nu afhankelijk van de goedheid van anderen.
Wij willen hen ondersteunen met een kleine, maandelijkse bijdrage. Een Oegandese familie heeft ongeveer € 30,- per week nodig om te overleven. Jij kan ze helpen door een bedrag te doneren. We hopen dat we dit met onze vrienden, partners en weldoeners de komende drie maanden kunnen laten gebeuren.

TOURISM EMERGENCY BAIL OUT FUND
The Corona pandemic has taken quite a toll on economies and tourism is probably the worst hit industry globally.
By the look of things, a return to business as usual is a distant dream, at least at this point. Local staff, guides and entire communities whose livelihoods depend on tourism risk having to go without food and other basic needs for the next couple of months.
Our goal is to start an emergency bailout fund to support our guides and local staff to at least feed themselves and their families during this time and for the coming months.
My name is Anne and I manage the Grassrootz operations in Uganda. Tour guides are central to our business as most of the time the tourist’s experience depends squarely on them.
With tourism on hold, all these guides have been confined in their homes looking for alternative ways to feed their families, in the hope that the industry will rise again and they will soon be back plying their trade and guaranteeing lifelong experiences for our tourists.
Meet David Otto, one of our safari guides. David loves to connect with tourists, has a great sense of humor and literally lives to guide, something he has delightfully done for over nine years. He is currently back in his home village, farming as he hopes for this all to be over. Deprived of a livelihood, David is one of the many guides who could currently do with some support to put food on the table.
The most critical need right now for our guides and local staff is food and other basic needs like health care. In the past, this would have never been an issue as they were earning an income and thus self-reliant. In the absence of any intervention from the government the situation could quickly move from bad to worse.
We want to at least be able to support them with a small monthly contribution towards their daily subsistence up until when they are able to work again.
The average urban or semi-urban Ugandan family needs about $30 to go through a week. By your contribution of any amount you will be enabling a guide and his family to go through another week with a few guarantees. We are hoping that with our friends, partners and well-wishers, we can make this happen for at least the next three months.
