Hi, my name is Nadja, I am an Australian Naturopath and a mother of 2 children.
My best friend Michelle recently moved back to her home town Rabaul, in Papua New Guinea, and visited the local hospital. And what she found was devastating, she was completely shocked by the poor condition the local Hospital was in. Michelle is a very compassioned, generous and caring person, and this devastation has prompted her to send me the below picture, of which completely and utterly shattered and horrified me.
The condition of this hospital is in one of the poorest condition I have ever seen. In the maternity ward too often women and their babies lose the fight for life because of eclampsia/pre-eclampsia and other birth-related complication which could have been prevented if basic equipment was available.
So we decided, that we have to do something, and at that, very fast!
We both have been living overseas for several years and have experienced the high-quality local hospitals provide to their patients. We both have given birth to, 2 beautiful children and were fortuned to experience a high quality of care, compassion and support during our pregnancies and labour. And we would like to bring this compassion and quality of care to this local community and the Nonga General Hospital in Rabaul. The focus is aimed at the most vulnerable part of the Hospital, the Maternity Ward.
As you might know, there is a lot of support, and care needed for our mum's to be, and there innocent newborn babies, our next generation.
The PNG government is trying to financially support these Hospitals, but due to the sever corruption, money rarely makes it to places where it is so desperately needed.
In order to support and deliver a high quality of care for mums and children, it is important that mothers feel save, supported and taken care off. The hospital is lacking elementary equipment and tools and for that very reason, we are looking for your support.
It is our ambition to improve the current situation and give what is so severely needed, basic things such neonatal equipment, running water, gloves, cleaning equipment, hospital beds, sheets, pillows, taps, sinks, maintenance, soap, food, baby clothes, nappies, ..….etc. Your support is key to solve this problem. By standing and working together we can achieve great things, and improve standards in this community.
