My mother, Nona Summers, died from a tragic fire related accident on August 28th 2025. The level of care and tenderness that she received at the Burns Intensive Care Unit at Broomfield Hospital, Essex will stay with me for the rest of my life. Words cannot express my gratitude to the staff who looked after her.

When I asked what I could do to help them, they shared with me the idea to create a private garden - just for the Burns Ward - where patients can be outside, sheltered and peaceful amongst the flowers and the birds. The nurses explained to me that some burns patients feel self conscious being outside in the world whilst they heal and this would be just for them.

My mother was happiest in her garden surrounded by jasmine listening to the birds. It brought her such joy. So much so that while she was in intensive care at Broomfield hospital the nurses and I put on bird music for her a night.

I want to raise enough money to somewhere for patients and their families to go for privacy and respite. Had she lived I know a place like this would have brought her peace.
