Non Profit 501c3 start up costs for the homeless

Homelessness is a global problem.  Homelessness can happen to any of us, our families, our loved ones, our friends, our neighbors and can happen in the blink of an eye. Homelessness is in your neighborhood, you may or may not even know it.

In the Winter into Spring of 2020, We started to notice a shift in our neighborhood and the increase in the number of homeless individuals walking on our street every day. We live on a street in which many non profit organizations reside and in very close proximity to an emergency overnight shelter. When COVID came, even more folks became homeless after their employers had to close their doors due to the state of emergency. With agencies having their employees working from home, it became extraordinarily difficult for folks to resolve simple tasks that were critical such as getting a copy of their social security card, birth certificate, and a copy of their driver's license because offices were closed. When you are in the homeless community, many times your wallet  and phone are stolen and you then have no identification. and no way to contact anyone.  Without identification and a phone, you can't get a job, you can't go to the doctor and you can not prove who you are and you can't call for help. If you do not have any money, you begin to feel hopeless and feel that you do not have a way out.

One of our founders, April Sandi, is a social worker, and began to feel more and more concerned at the growing number of homeless sitting in between buildings, in tents, and folks being turned away from the overnight shelter because it was full. One day, a homeless 34 year old woman with mental health issues was sitting  on April's front porch eating her lunch with no shoes or coat in frigid weather. That was the day that April began talking about the urgent issues and that something had to be done in the community with our other founder, Talia Ramey, who works in agriculture.  Talia began to come up with sustainable solutions to basic necessity needs that homeless folks were having. April Sandi and Talia Ramey started volunteering at the day shelter for the homeless with the Salvation Army inside of Grace United Church. It was there after many months of working with the homeless population  that April and Talia founded Global Necessity, a 501c3 focusing on linking folks to basic necessities such as food, clothing, water shelter, and health care. There are many organizations in the community in which we live that assist the homeless. We are happy to report that after one year of case management assistance with our founders, the young woman who was on April's porch eating lunch is moving into a residential program that can give her all the supports that she needs.
What we have found is that the homeless need advocates and case managers to help link them to basic global necessities and this is how the idea for Global Necessity was born.

Our biggest need is money for start up costs. April and Talia have been working on a $0 budget assisting the homeless community with advocacy and case management for over one year now.  We have assisted people enrolling into rehab for drug addiction, pointed them to agencies that can help them pay for their identification, assisting with housing, hotels, clothing, shoes, job placement, medication co payments, medicaid enrollment, advocating for folks when they have been treated unjustly or basic needs met from organizations as well as countless other resources.

We are partnered with every non profit in our area that serves the homeless as well as countless churches.
We brought community to the homeless by partnering with Yogamour, a 501c3 organization that provides trauma informed yoga once a week as well as Rhythm Changes, a 501c3 organization that provides music and art lessons. Our biggest partner is the Salvation Army who provides countless financial assistance to the homeless community that we work together serving. Currently we are partnered with community organizations and have been hosting COVID vaccine pop up clinics to the community.
A staggering issue right, which is shared across the globe is affordable housing. We would like to have funds to assist folks so that we can fund emergency shelter space when local shelters are full as well as create funds to assist our population attain affordable transitional housing.

Global Necessity is a 501c3 grassroots non profit linking individuals experiencing homelessness with tools and resources that lead to stabilization. We advocate for a world in which every being has access to food, water, clothing, shelter and health care.

Our vision to to have Global Necessity become a global non profit that supports all communities. We are looking for volunteers to start other chapters to support Global Necessity. Please contact us if you are interested on learning more.

Homelessness is not a character flaw. ®
