Nomy & Lisa need a Love Boost
Hey Community!
Nomy and I are in a transition phase, moving toward secure housing via home “ownership” and purchasing a new-to-us, used, reliable electric car. For the first time we will no longer be renters. We will have a mortgage and a car payment. So exciting, and also a lot of debt and responsibility. Things we never imagined for ourselves. We are grateful to have a roof and access to land to tend. We are scrambling to meet the need for cash. We are asking for $5,000 to help us through this portal.
Over the past 6 months, we have had a number of difficult financial burdens. In November, the roof in the bathroom sprung a leak through a light fixture. This winter, over a dozen trees fell on the land where we live, crushing Nomy’s dome, and the black walnut fell onto the house/garage. This second major roof repair is “covered” by insurance, and we have a $4,000 deductible we have to pay. The tree also impacted the accessibility path, which needs repair. We recently had a rat and mouse infestation, mostly in our garage and in the heat ducts. We had a couple plumbing issues with water backing into the garage, we had an emergency plumber come out and got some pipes replaced. We had the septic system serviced. Our washing machine was failing and we had to get a new-to-us used one. A few months later, after three times getting repaired, the dryer stopped working beyond repair and we replaced that with a used unit. Our stove leaks gas, and the gas company has advised us to replace it after we tried to fix it a couple times. That’s on the back burner now. I am naming things and likely forgetting some, and people who own homes are familiar with how expensive all these things can be. It has been the agreement (that we are legally in) to be responsible for repairs the past couple years.
We are transitioning from rent-to-own to “owning” our Home here on this almost two acres of Squaxin Land. What a blessing and privilege that is. I’m a formerly UNhoused poverty scholar, I never thought that possible. I barely believe it, and it is true. There are $15,000 of “closing costs” involved with this transition. Our sweet eggplant cube car, that Nomy has had for 15 years, has reached its time to retire. The transmission has been replaced three times (under warranty) and is slipping again to the point where it is unsafe to drive on freeways, and is no longer covered by the warranty. We found a used electric car and are super excited about that, which comes with a down payment and car payments.
As I have shared some of this info with friends, a number of you have said, “if you open up an ask, I would love to support you.” So here we are, in these times where there is so much need, and asking, creating an opportunity for you to collectively care for us.
We live a life of mutual aid. What that means for us, is that we are continuously in motion radically redistributing love dollars and resources. I see it as part of my life’s work, having been doing it long before all this language existed, making sure folks’ needs are met, like breathing. Living this life also means that occasionally we ask for support when we need help. Never be afraid to ask for help. We have been saving for awhile, and all these things happening at once is too tight a squeeze. Nomy and I need a love boost, and $5,000 is gonna really help us right now. Any dollar amount and sharing this effort will help so much.
This is such good news!
Thank you.
Lisa
