This is Nolan Theseus Hernandez. He is one of the sweetest, kindest, and bravest little boys you’ll ever meet. Nolan comes from a very loving and caring family with a strong devoted mother, a hard-working father, and a younger brother who looks up to Nolan. Like many great families, everything the Hernandez family does is for their kids and they always put their two little boys first.

On Wednesday, September 29th, 2021, just one week after his 4th birthday, we received the devastating news that Nolan was diagnosed with the most aggressive form of Leukemia. Needless to say, our hearts were completely shattered. How could such an evil disease be bestowed on such a sweet, kind, innocent, and loving child. One week we’re celebrating his birthday, then the next we’re in the hospital discussing with doctors how we can save his life. For almost 3 months, Nolan has undergone extensive, intense chemotherapy treatment. We are beyond grateful for the care that he’s received by the wonderful doctors, nurses, and staff at Summerlin Hospital in Las Vegas. They’ve gone above and beyond at making Nolan feel at home and allowed family to decorate his room with Halloween, Christmas, and superhero themes to keep his spirits high.

Despite the doctors’ relentless efforts and working tirelessly to give Nolan the best possible treatment, the resilient disease has forced the Hernandez family to take a different clinical route. Nolan now requires a stem cell transplant. The Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles offers the largest comprehensive BMT program in the nation and has the specialized resources to complete the procedure. Without a second thought, Nelly (Nolan’s mom) has quit her job and is making arrangements to move to Los Angeles to be with her son while he receives the necessary treatment. Ivan (Nolan’s dad) is arranging an unpaid leave with his job and is selling his vehicle in order to continue providing for his family. Nelly and Ivan are going to try and balance the hospital life with Nolan and making new living arrangements with their other 1.5yr old son. They are entering a new state, a new hospital, and a new treatment - all of which are far from home and from family.

No family should ever go through this, especially during the holidays. Unfortunately, this disease has taken away so much from the Hernandez family and has impacted so many other friends and families. And sadly, we’re not the only ones. But one thing it could never take away is Nolan’s unbreakable spirit, his strong heart, his positive outlook, and his perseverance. Our little warrior is resilient and we are confident that he will beat cancer.
