Saving the wildlife of the ocean is a difficult task for a number of reasons. Because marine species are not common pets, humans usually do not share a relationship with them as one would a dog. This creates a lack of sympathy for fish. Also when people usually think of fish they think of food. 4.3 billion people are reliant on fish for 15 percent of their protein intake (daily). This means that at least 4.3 billion people are eating between half a fish in protein and a full fish in protein.
The reason I am trying to raise money for the oceans wild-life does not involve opinions on the moral correctness of killing animals or their use as food. The reason I am interested in saving the oceans is because of the beauty these marine species protect.
Living in the long island sound I am fortunate enough to have relatively protected coastlines. Most reading this are not in the same position. Most reading this can drive to their closest beach, if near one, and look out into the Atlantic, Pacific, or whatever ocean it may be. The beautiful coasts of the majority of the world are protected by marine wildlife. Whether this is miles of oyster beds protecting the north east’s beautiful coasts from saltwater erosion and the destruction that comes with crashing waves. Or a tropical coastline having two times as much protection from a tsunami than a coast without a healthy coral reef.
At the end of the day, there are countless reasons as to why one should make an effort to save the ocean. If not for the sake of the food they provide for the world, do it for the beauty that this wildlife preserves.
