Nola and Darren

This page is for Darren and Nola Jones to help cover costs associated with medical treatment for Darren in Winnipeg.  Nobody likes to have their private lives out there for all to view, so I will try to be discreet and not intrude on Darren and Nola's privacy, but I need to give you enough information, so that you will want to help support them financially and also help by spreading the word to friends, family and co-workers that this page is here for them to visit.

My name is Murray Martin and I am Nola's cousin.  Nola and Darren are experiencing a major health issue. Darren has been diagnosed with cancer and the tumour is affecting his ability to talk, swallow and eat; the treatment involves a combination of chemo and radiation. Darren began treatment several weeks ago; he has experienced nausea, weight loss and extreme fatigue .The initial treatment plan will take seven weeks of chemo and radiation, then Darren will have a break to rejuvenate, the treatment team will assess his progress and decide if/when more treatments are required.  Darren's treatment is highly specialized and must take place in Winnipeg; MHSC does not cover living expenses for rural patients. Therefore, the cost of accommodations, meals, travel, etc. is borne by the patient and their family. In addition to the illness, they are also dealing with Covid 19 and its ramifications.  Lennox Bell and Ronald McDonald house are closed which leaves them finding accommodations in a motel at $85 per night.  Darren is not able to eat most foods so this adds additional costs because meals can not be made at home and taken with them and meals are not doable in a motel.  Darren is working hard to stay healthy enough to continue with the weekly treatments. Darren will have a long journey ahead of him after treatments are over.
Nola is on this long journey as well making sure Darren has a safe place to stay where he can sleep to help with recovery.  In addition to keeping Darren cared for,  Nola is  driving him to and from his treatments at Health Sciences, shopping for the right foods that give Darren lots of calories but are easy to swallow without aggravating the sores in his mouth.    The stress on the body from radiation and chemo are extremely difficult to manage in the process. Hopefully, we, you and I, friends and family, can reduce the financial stress of all the additional expenses  to  provide them with some relief.  Can you help?  Yes you can.  $20 pays for 1 day of parking, $50 will purchase 1 day's meals. $250 buys a week of groceries.  The motel room costs $85 or $425 per week.  Please consider donating a few dollars to help your friends in need.  EACH donation is appreciated and all will go a long way towards making Darren's recovery less stressful.
