ASL Translation of English text:
Who I am
Hello! My name is Noah Nieves Driver and I am a senior at Western Oregon University (WOU). I am majoring in ASL/English Interpreting and minored in Spanish and Linguistics. I have been studying American Sign Language (ASL) for 5 years now and have been a part of the Deaf community since I first started 5 years ago. I am passionate about language, equal access, and the Deaf community and have been on the honor roll since I first started attending WOU 4 years ago. I have also presented at WOU’s Academic Excellence Showcase and have a 3.75 GPA.
Why I’m fundraising
Because this is my last year at WOU, for Spring term I will be going on a full-time, unpaid internship at a high school in Texas. Between working on-campus, working as a dog-walker, and being a full-time student, I have been able to save up some money, but need your help with the rest. My goal is to fundraise $4,000 by April.
Why donate
Having this internship will give me real-world experience and put me ahead of other recent graduates. ASL interpreters are almost exclusively white, straight women. By entering this field, I will be providing diversity and the cultural knowledge that comes with it. I will also be providing representation for Deaf Black and/or Queer men, a community that is severely underrepresented in ASL interpreting, especially in Oregon. I want to work in K-12 settings and be a role-model for Deaf Black and/or Queer children who have probably never had a Black/Queer interpreter. After I graduate, I plan to stay in Oregon and want to increase the amount of Black and/or Queer interpreters.
Cost breakdown
All donations will go towards car repairs, travel expenses, food, lodging, a laptop, and interpreter certification tests. Any amount is appreciated and no donation is too small. Thank you so much for reading this and donating, and please share this with your friends, family, and community!
