KIPP Pueblo Unido, a well-resourced charter school, has been colluding with Cudahy City Council to build a school on toxic land. KIPP Pueblo Unido believes that they are above the law. They argue that they are exempt from a complete environmental impact report on the toxic land where they plan to build a new school for 1,200 children.
Yet, the lot located at 7801-7835 Otis Avenue is on a state list of hazardous waste sites and has dangerously high levels of ARSENIC (200 times more the amount that doesn't threaten human health or the environment.) The City Council hasn't legally required KIPP Pueblo Unido clean up hazardous waste or take steps to protect future students.
KIPP Pueblo Unido and City Council need to be forced to do the right thing. They must conduct an in depth study of how building on this lot will will affect the environment and the community as mandated by the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) and clean it up before they build a school on that site. Their plan to proceed without a legally-binding clean up shows their lack of respect for our community, the safety of our students, and the environment.
Despite Covid-19, we've organized, protested, attended numerous City Council meetings and hearings in efforts to stop the construction of an unnecessary, privately-run, charter school in the City of Cudahy. KIPP Pueblo Unido has responded by "lawyering-up". Their attorneys have attempted to intimidate and silence Cudahy residents. They have failed.
Now, we turn to you, the people. We ask for your monetary support to stop KIPP Pueblo Unido. We are raising funds to file a lawsuit against KIPP Pueblo Unido and the City of Cudahy for allowing another environmental injustice.
We will use the funds raised for legal representation and filing fees for the lawsuit. We need $2,000 immediately, then $20,000 by November 3, 2020. After that, we will need to pay ongoing lawyer fees for approximately one year.
Join our cause by contributing with any amount and by sharing this worthy fundraiser to anyone who you think might support us! Together we can fight corporate ties, big money, political corruption, and building schools on toxic land.
Stand in solidarity with us to protect the rights of children in the City of Cudahy.
Thank you for your support us as we stand-up to the Goliath bully, KIPP Pueblo Unido!
