When I left the Pentecostal ministry nearly two decades ago, I never imagined I’d return to any kind of pulpit. But the call to serve never really let go of me—it just grew deeper, broader, and more grounded in love, justice, and inclusion.
Now, I’m on the path to becoming a Unitarian Universalist minister, and I’m raising $6,500 to help cover basic living expenses during the school year so I can focus more fully on my seminary studies.
Who I Am
I’m Clint Tawes—a lifelong educator, father, former Pentecostal minister, and proud member of the Edisto Natchez-Kusso Tribe of South Carolina. A few years ago, I began formal steps toward Unitarian Universalist ministry, and this fall, I’m resuming seminary at Starr King School for the Ministry—a UU seminary rooted in progressive values and liberation theology.
Why I’m Raising Funds
Last year, I moved to South Carolina to help care for my mother, who is living with Alzheimer’s. I took time away from school to get settled and support her. Now that I’ve regained my footing, I’m returning to seminary to complete what I began.
I’m grateful to have received the President’s Scholarship at Starr King, which covers my tuition in full. But I still face the challenge of managing time and energy. I currently teach middle school English full-time, preach regularly in UU congregations, and serve on the governing council of my tribe.
To cover everyday expenses like groceries and gas, I also drive for Lyft in the evenings. I typically earn about $200 per week doing so. My teaching salary covers my basic bills, but nothing more.
How Your Support Helps
This fundraiser will allow me to reduce—or, ideally, pause—my Lyft driving hours during the semester (September–December and late January–May). That time will instead go toward my coursework, spiritual formation, and service to others.
Your support will help me create the space I need to grow, learn, and become the minister I’m called to be.
Thank you for walking with me on this journey.
