Stop Suez's Matraville Incinerator
No More Incinerators is a registered, Not-for-Profit Community Association seeking donations to fight a waste incinerator Suez are proposing to build at Opal's Matraville paper recycling plant. And we need your help to tell the NSW Government what the community really thinks of Suez's plans!
Suez's waste incinerator will put public health at risk, permanently damage the environment and impact thousands of people.
Suez propose to burn 165,000 tonnes/year of plastics, textiles, furniture and other materials to help power the Opal paper mill.
The incinerator will discharge a cocktail of toxic pollutants covering Sydney's eastern and southern suburbs and increase our greenhouse gas emissions.
It’ll operate 24 hours a day and discharge toxic heavy metals, dioxins and other persistent organic pollutants from a 60m high stack located less than 100 metres from people’s homes! Similar 24/7 operations overseas have been identified as significant causes of damage to the environment and to the health of surrounding communities.
SUEZ claim that waste incineration is a safe, clean and environmentally sound way to dispose of waste and make energy. However, a closer look at the facilities operated by SUEZ reveals a different story. Ongoing environmental licence breaches, pollution events, fires and accidents are all associated with waste incinerators and burning waste is the main cause of dangerous pollutants being released into the surrounding environment affecting the health of the surrounding communities.
In short, waste incineration is the most polluting and expensive way to make energy and manage waste.
