My mother served the majority of her life as a Certified Nurse Assistant (CNA) Taking care of others. 4 years ago she suffered a very bad stroke that left her with Aphasia (resulting from brain damage on the left side of her brain) and her entire right side is affected by Flaccid paralysis (She is wheelchair bound). She currently resides in a nursing home and this is her 3rd nursing home. It has been difficult to simply keep her safe in these facilities.
What you're about to see is very disturbing. On Thursday, June 21st 2018 I received a call from the nursing home stating my mother refused to come in from outside where she was enjoying the weather. I got into my car and proceeded to the nursing home. When I got there I was met by the front desk staff who informed me that 5 to 6 people had to bring my mother inside the facility. I thought that to be extreme, but when I continued to her room, I could hear my mother crying from the elevator (about 30 feet from her room). When I walked into the room, I was appalled to find her on the floor with her arm pinned under her bed. She was crying helplessly lying on the floor. I could not believe what I was seeing. I took a video, attached here because no one would believe me. There were no nurses in her room helping her, comforting her or even outside her bedroom door to attend to her. How long has she been laying on the floor like this? I got her up safely, secured her and went looking for the nurses. I found them at the nurse station (10 feet from her room). They were simply ignoring her. My mother had was laying in soiled clothes and at my request the nurses jumped into action to care for her. They put her back in her wheelchair, cleaned and changed her clothes. What if I had not come? The abuse and neglect has to stop.
I am trying to give my mother a better quality of life for the next 10 years. She is currently 74 years old. I'm trying to keep my mother safe so she can be at peace, thrive and not suffer for the remainder of her days. However, she needs around the clock care. It is very expensive ($167,440 a year). All of the funds will go directly to my mother's care. This will help provide additional private care, allow her to travel outside the facility and be part of the community again; increasing her quality of life and protect her from neglect. My goal is to raise the first years amount to begin protecting her immediately and look for a better facility while seeking resources to maintain her private care. Also, I will be using my talents to raise support as a Dance Fitness instructor, along with my colleagues, as we have done in the past for others. We do zumbathons and raise support for people in need. It's now mom's turn. My family continues to support her as well by paying for additional care for special outings to allow my mother some relief from being in the facility 24/7. It will be nice for her to come and go as she pleases with the help of private care to visit family and loved ones at their home instead of the other way around. We use the little her social security funds provide for additional care too, but because she is on Medicaid/Medicare, this is very limited; as she is in a long term care facility where she should be receiving quality care. Your donations will help to keep her safe in the facility and allow her mobility outside the facility to see her grandchildren play sports, go to functions and have the care while outside of the facility.
She needs your help for any amount you can give. This has been a long fight, keeping safe. This is her 4th facility. Hiring additional private care will hold the nursing home accountable and fill in the gaps they lack. We saw in our Nation how Obama raised money for his presidential campaign with small donations from many. I know I can raise this amount with the help of many small contributions from those who have compassion and are willing to give $1.00, $5.00 or more . There are others ways you can help by bringing awareness to this situation by posting on Instagram, Facebook and Twitter. You can copy the link to the video associated with this fundraiser and get the word out. Please send to any local or national news, organizations, celebrities or Oprah! I am simply asking for your help. I can't work full time, take care of my own family and keep my mother safe in places like this. Your support means so much and will definitely make a difference in the life of one who has served others during the best years of her life. Please help her regain her dignity and taste what love is again. Will you contribute today? Will you share her story by posting this on social media? Thank you for considering our request.
