update!
after a few phone calls. i was able to book an apt late October in augusta to get both ladies spayed the same day- 350$ flat rate for each dog- compared to the 1400 i was quoted per dog from the small animal clinic. Safe to say we will be switching vets !
I am coming to you as a last resort. I rarely ask for help for myself, but i find myself caught with not much other choice.
In February of this past winter, a friend reached out to me about a litter of pups she had taken in as an emergency foster, from a pretty awful case of abuse, neglect., and gross over breeding. The pups breed were the same mix as dixie- our elder dog who will soon be finding her way to the rainbow bridge. After some thought I agreed to foster (to potentially adopt) one of the smaller female pups- but when I told my children about the puppy, they were immediately more concerned about who was going to step up for the mama dog. They know and understood that most folks go for the cute little pups- and the mommas often go on forgotten.
As it turned out, Mama, as many, many older black dogs have found- had no interest for foster or adoption, and not only that, was in pretty bad shape from the years of abuse, neglect, and puppy harvesting she had endured. The first time i saw her my heart just shattered, frost bitten ears, teats. Lips, missing so much hair, rail thin… and this momma had still protected and nursed her puppies in the bitter February cold, permanently kenneled outside with no shelter or warmth. - at the literal expense of her own self.
I was immediately smitten, connected in a way i havent experienced before with a dog, and promised her that shed never spend another night left outside in the elements, never be forced to welp another litter, never again be forced to sacrifice her own life for her endless line of pups.
before agreeing to take BOTH the pup and the mama into my care, knowing that once they were here, they would be family, I had done my research and found the funding programs I knew I would need to get mama spayed and back on her feet.
But before I could secure an appointment, our Government stepped in and stripped the State funding for all “unnecessary” programs, one of which happened to be a state funded low cost spay and neuter.
Now, Mama desperately needs our help, so she can heal properly, so she can take the next step forward to her own freedom, and never be faced with that horror ever again. She is safe here with us, and loved, and she has so deeply bonded with not only myself, but my children.
I made her a promise, one that I can no longer keep- without your help.
will you please consider helping mama dog on her journey to health and happiness?
Can you help me keep my promises to her??
