Villa Blanca Reef is in immediate danger of being destroyed. If the construction of Cozumel’s proposed 4th cruise ship pier goes forward, it will be built directly on top of this vibrant and fragile coral reef system. This means permanent, irreversible damage: corals crushed under concrete pylons, marine habitats destroyed, and the loss of one of the last freely accessible snorkeling and diving reefs on the island.
What makes Villa Blanca Reef so important?
Villa Blanca is a shallow reef teeming with life—home to endangered coral species, juvenile fish nurseries, sea turtles, eagle rays, and more. It lies just outside the boundaries of Cozumel’s Marine Park, making it a critical public resource for locals, divers, students, researchers, and families who cannot afford park entry fees or boat tours. It is also the heart of Cozumel’s citizen-led coral restoration efforts.
What’s happening now?
Despite widespread opposition, the proposed pier project is moving forward based on an Environmental Impact Report (EIR) filled with inaccuracies, omissions, and misleading claims. If unchallenged, this flawed report could be used to justify the destruction of Villa Blanca Reef. We URGENTLY need your support to raise 350,000.00 pesos (~$20,000) to conduct an investigation that will clarify all of the false and inaccurate statements that are included in the Environmental Impact Report.
We are a coalition of island citizens, marine biologists, dive professionals, conservationists, and volunteers who have spent the last three years fighting this project. Now, science is our strongest and last remaining defense.
The funds will cover:
- A professional certified staff of Marine Biologist and Oceanologists.
- A complete mapping and survey of the area that will be impacted
- A report that will be provided to the local and international authorities advocating for the cancellation of this project
Time is critical. Construction plans are advancing, we must act now to present the science and protect Villa Blanca Reef.
