As long as I can remember I have been obsessed with stories. Writing them, reading them, speaking them, listening to them. Storytelling is not only part of my Somali lineage and responsibility, it has become the place where my politics, creativity and social justice intersect.
In early 2015, I was blessed to have a short story series I wrote "Black Woman, Everybody's Healer” not only selected to appear as part of Jalada Africa’s Afrofuture(s) anthology but also longlisted for the inaugural Jalada Prize for Literature. (http://jalada.org/the-jalada-prize)
Black Woman, Everybody’s Healer is a short fiction series that explores the fragmented experiences and identities that Black women are often asked to silence, negotiate and balance as part of their daily lives. These stories straddle the line between real life, myth and the celestial. They are stories filled with magic as much as they are filled with reality.
I have recently been honoured with acceptance into Humber College’s Creative Writing by Correspondence Postgraduate Certificate program in MAY 2015. It is an exceptional 30 week program where I will be working closely with Shyam Selvadurai who is an award winning Sri Lankan Canadian novelist to finish a book length manuscript.
Fam, I’m ready to finish ‘Black Woman, Everybody’s Healer’, it has been a long time in coming and I truly believe the work I have produced and will produce is exceptional.
Here is where I need your help. I received a partial scholarship to cover 50% of my costs to enrol in this program. I’m fundraising the additional 50%. Can you give? Can you support? Can you help me reach this dream?
