I am raising money for educational and medical/research purposes for Neuromyelitis Optica and Neuromyelitis Optica Spectrum Disorder.

What is NMO and NMOSD?

Neuromyelitis Optica (NMO) is a rare chronic autoimmune disease that targets the central nervous system, leading to either the spinal cord or the optic nerve. Neuromyelitis Optica Spectrum Disorder (NMOSD) is a rare inflammatory disease that most often strikes the optic nerves, spinal cord, and/or brain.

Either of these could target anyone, leading to: -

• vision loss

• physical and cognitive impairment

• spinal cord dysfunction

• and disability.

In 2019, it was estimated that only 2,564 of 66.8 million people in the UK struggled with NMO, and roughly 1,000 people had NMOSD. Unfortunately, as this targets a minor percentage of the UK population, the research department have fewer funds to assist with further developments.

My story

In 2023, at the age of 22, I was diagnosed with NMO. One morning, I lost almost complete vision in my left eye when waking up. I did not obtain any injuries beforehand, nor was this genetic, just a coincidence. After being assessed by three different hospitals, I was finally diagnosed. During this period, as scary as this period was for me, I trusted the doctors to guide me through a therapeutic plasma exchange (PLEX). Whilst I have now gained the majority of my eyesight back, I do struggle daily with day-to-day tasks.

To support this cause, I will be swinging from Europe’s biggest swing based in Bluewater in July 2026 as a three-year anniversary of my diagnosis. Between this time, starting from 1st November 2025, I will be doing a 60-day skipping challenge, leading me to 31st December 2025.
