This is my brother Officer Javier (Toby) Hernandez and my sister on the day of his graduation from the Dona Ana Sheriffs Dept. last year. On Tuesday June 2, 2015 Benjamin Martinez, 62, of Canutillo, TX walked into the New Mexico Human Service Department offices in Anthony, N.M. where my brother was working as a security guard in order to earn extra income to support himself and his 12 year old daughter, and shot him three times at close range. At least once in the back barely missing his spinal cord. My brother was unarmed although he is a certified officer and able to carry a weapon. He was doing his best to protect the citizens of Anthony NM against an armed man with unknown motives and a shot gun. He put himself in harms way in order to give those people an opportunity to escape.

This is my brother now. He is in critical condition in ICU and with the help of a ventilator he is breathing. He now has only one lung an open abdomen wound as well as many other injuries including the possible loss of use of his left arm. This horrible act of violence has left my brother fighting for his life and his family in chaos. On top of the already tragic situation my family and I find ourselves in the unfortunate situation of having to provide funds for his bills which have been building up while he is receiving medical care. Myself and the family have missed several days of work in order to be by his side in his time of need. It has been difficult to provide the funds since we all have taken time off work without pay. We would appreciate any help we could get in this tragic situation. We are asking for donations and prayers to help this Hero who risked his life to protect and serve.
