During our four years at North Miami Beach Senior High School, we grew academically, artistically, athletically and socially. We forged lasting relationships with friends and the North Miami Beach community that time and distance will not break. Since opening its doors, our school has gone from one with enormous resources, to a school in which many of its students' families have very limited financial means. For example, currently over 80% of the students receive need-based subsidized lunches.
By all measures, our class is enormously successful economically, socially and politically. Many of our classmates are prominent in their fields - business owners, professionals, and proud public servants; many, in fact, right here in the Miami-Dade County Public School System. We, as your reunion committee, have decided to "pay it back." That is why we are raising money for the “Principal’s Fund” at North Miami Beach Senior High School. We have set a modest goal - $1987. Current principal Randy Milliken says the school has a need for the following, and we will earmark the funds for these specific areas:
1. Security Enhancement: A golf cart to patrol the school campus as well as off-campus areas during dismissal and lunchtime. The cart might also be used for athletic programs and trainers.
2. Equipment for TV Studio: The school has had to disband the TV production program so they would love to update the equipment to enable them to do live morning announcements.
3. Computer Lab Furniture: They are currently building a computer lab which will need furniture.
4. PBS Store Supplies: To help instill positive behavior, NMB would like to start a Positive Behavior Rewards Store. Here students are given "Charger Bucks" to purchase items for demonstrating positive behavior.
This is a big initiative of Miami-Dade Schools.
The Class of 1977 ran a successful fundraiser this year and collected $10,530 for the school. That is well over their goal of $1,977. If other alumni continue this tradition of giving back, think of the impact we can have on future generations of Chargers!
To give back to the school, please donate here on this gofundme website. You can also contribute by sending a check made out to "NMB Class of 1987 Reunion" to 11225 Hunting Horn Lane, Reston, VA 20191. We will also be accepting donations during the reunion.
We ask that you give this request the due consideration that it merits, and thank you for your support.
Looking forward to seeing you at the reunion!
