Our sweet Macy was diagnosed with Chiari Malformation (key-AR-ee) on January 20, 2015. It is a neurological condition that causes the base or "tonsils" of the cerebellum to herniate downward, crowding the skull and putting pressure on both the brain and brain stem. It has also caused obstruction of the flow of the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) causing a syrinx (abnormal collection of CSF) within her spinal cord, causing additional symptoms. Macy suffers from severe headaches, neck pain, numbness in her extremities, difficulty swallowing, vision changes, fatigue, loss of appetite, and short term memory loss/confusion.
THERE IS NO CURE! Only Decompression Surgery.
The surgery will consist of removing bone at the back of the skull and spine. The dura overlying the "tonsils" is then opened and a patch (mesh) is sewn into the area to expand the space and hopefully relieve the pressure and alleviate some of the symptoms.
Macy will undergo her first surgery on March 12, 2015. While we are hopeful that it will be a success, living with Chiari will be a lifelong battle for Macy and most patients require multiple surgeries.
The goal of this fundraiser is to raise enough money to cover the portion of the surgery that the insurance does not cover. Any additional funds will be used toward gas, medication copays, and any other cost associated with her ongoing medical expenses.
