Our school has an awesome opportunity to interact with NASA scientists and engineers and be part of the future in aerospace!
Recently, the students have learned about the SMAP satellite and its global implications. Their interest in NASA grew. However, they showed greater interest in the mission to someday send people to Mars.
Their teacher was one of the few people that NASA selected to attend the test firing of the SLS rocket booster. This is the largest, most powerful rocket to EVER be fired! It is the booster that will someday send humans to asteroids and to Mars.
Besides witnessing the test firing , and vlogging it for the students, she will meet with NASA scientists and engineers who designed this technology. She will get to ask them questions from the students, and blog, tweet, and vlog their responses to the students in real time.
The students and the school community is excited about this educational experience! However there is one significant problem: there is no money left in the school budget for the travel costs. There is a plan to set aside money for such opportunities for next year, however, there is only one "first test-firing" and our students do not want to miss it. Nor do we want to close doors to NASA opportunities in the future.
Finding out that there was no funding for this was literally "last minute" as the event is only days away. We have looked at other grants and ideas, but none cover transportation costs or can be done in a short time.
One last cool thing about this: anyone can partcipate! Although our teacher will be making blogs, videos, and tweeting for her classes related directly to our curriculum and their curiosity, and anybody can follow along and be part of the journey to Mars!
