Hello Everyone,
The National Organization of Minority Architecture Students (NOMAS) here at NJIT is asking for your help today. As a national organization, our mission statement is to champion diversity, strive for academic excellence, and provide professional networks to our students. Overall, there’s a keen sense of camaraderie between the student body, the community, and professionals as we work to enhance living conditions in our community.
This partnership is what allowed for an integrated studio this summer to partake in a competition that challenges the notion of gentrification. Led by Darius Sollohub, a lifelong advocate for inclusion in Newark and other urban areas, our studio is working towards a proposal for a multi-use building that effectively encompasses the community around it.
This year’s annual NOMAS Conference will take place close to home in Brooklyn, New York, October 16-20. We hope to present this proposal and use this competition to further epitomize what our organization stands for, inclusion in architecture, in a professional setting. We are currently in need of financial backing to produce physical models.
As many past architecture students know well, architecture school is not cheap. It often limits those with a heart for service to present proposals that can change the field for those without a voice. We want to give people in developing neighborhoods a voice with our architecture. We refuse to count ourselves out of the competition. With help from donors, we aim to raise 7,000 by August 2, 2019 ( the first deadline for our proposal). This money would go directly to 3d printing, laser printing, and acquiring materials for our team to produce a quality model. Any donation is greatly appreciated and we ask kindly if you would pass this along to your colleagues and friends. We would be honored to have you on our team to fight for inclusion in architecture. Thank you in advance for your time.
