Join me in support of Sambo Creek and surrounding Garifuna (Afro-Honduran) communities of the Northern Coast of Honduras: they need funds and materials to address the urgent medical needs of its people.
At this moment, the whole area has been battered by Hurricanes Eta and Iota, causing extensive flooding. Food is scarce, people have been displaced, basic necessities are lacking
The Sambo Creek and neighboring communities are resisting the Honduran government’s plans to annex their land to develop large scale tourism and currently building a thermoelectric plant that is contaminating the environment. The Garifunas, like other indigenous groups in Honduras, have taken actions to defend their patrimony and have suffered the consequences: in 2019, 22 of their leaders who led the resistance were murdered. And 3 months ago, 5 local community leaders were disappeared
Raising $2000 will provide them with medicines and medical supplies to treat common illnesses and traumas for 3 months. Despite the serious challenges from poverty and repression that it faces, Sambo Creek benefits from the services of two physicians raised in the community, who received their training at the Latin American School of Medicine in Cuba. The community is reviving its ancestral traditions of cultivating the land and growing medicinal plants and in so doing, gaining a degree of independence from the Honduran Government to address its basic needs. Here in Boston, we have become acutely aware of their challenges and struggles through the testimony of one of their leaders, Omar Suazo.
Sambo Creek is an inspiring example of a community in resistance to a repressive Government that came to power with a coup that our State Department recognized and supported ever since and allowed multinational corporations to take control of the land for its own benefit.

Únase conmigo en apoyo a Sambo Creek y a las comunidades garífunas en el área de la costa norte de Honduras: ellos necesitan fondos y materiales para atender las necesidades médicas de su gente. La situación es urgente.
En este momento, toda la zona se ha visto afectada por el huracán Eta, provocando grandes inundaciones. La comida es escasa, la gente ha sido desplazada y carecen de necesidades básicas .
Sambo Creek es un ejemplo de una de estas comunidades. Faltan medicamentos y suministros médicos para tratar enfermedades y traumas comunes. COVID 19 está en aumento. Los servicios brindados por el gobierno son inadecuados, costosos y muchas personas no pueden comprar medicamentos por falta de ingresos. Las oportunidades de trabajo son escasas y las personas sobreviven principalmente gracias a las remesas de los miembros de la comunidd que dejaron su hogar y emigraron al norte.
Sin embargo, cuentan con los servicios de dos médicos de la comunidad, quienes recibieron su formación en la Escuela Latinoamericana de Medicina en Cuba. Además, la comunidad está reviviendo sus tradiciones ancestrales de cultivar la tierra y cultivar plantas medicinales y, al hacerlo, está ganando un grado de independencia del gobierno hondureño para atender sus necesidades básicas.
El pueblo garífuna, de ascendencia africana, que llegó a Honduras desde San Vicente en el siglo XVIII, ha tenido que luchar para conservar sus tierras y preservar sus tradiciones. Ahora mismo, el Gobierno y las corporaciones multinacionales quieren anexarlos, esto es claramente una violación de los Acuerdos Internacionales al sobornar a la gente para que los venda. Muchos, al no ver ninguna alternativa, han emigrado.
Los garífunas, como otros grupos indígenas en Honduras, han tomado acciones para defender su patrimonio y han sufrido las consecuencias: en 2019 fueron asesinadas 22 personas que lideraban la resistencia. Otro ejemplo de la represión es la desaparición de 5 de sus líderes hace 3 meses
