There is a local boy in Statham, GA with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD). His name is Nixon Stinchcomb. He is a great young man with good grades and is involved in the JROTC program at the high school. Due to progressive deterioration of muscle, loss of movement occurred, eventually leading to paralysis. His mom, Dierdre, is a hospice nurse (works full time taking care of those who can not care for themselves at work and at home).
Nixon has a (used) handicap accessible van that they had to drain their savings and borrow money to get once he was to big to pick up for every doctors appointment and going to and from school.
Long story short, he has to have this van. Our school buses do not equip his wheelchair because it is motorized and that is a liability for them on the ramp. The van came with a very complex computer system, which like most technology has malfunctioned repeatedly. They can't even start the van without it working, but desperately need it taken off the van because they can not afford to keep repairing it.
The lesser cost is to have the entire system removed and to replace his ramp with a manual ramp that he can be pushed up. It's still over $3000 to have the system put back to factory so the vehicle will run without it. (The handicapped person they bought the van from drove himself and needed everything electronic so everything ignition, transmission, engine is currently controlled by the non working computer).
Nixon has to motor himself to school some mornings with a parent walking behind (whether it is cold or raining... Which is horrible for his wheelchair) when the can will not start.
PLEASE help this young man get the transportation repair he needs!
