I'm here to share the journey of our cherished friend Nienke Van de Zand, better known as Nin. Nin, a 24-year-old nurse, has endured quite the rollercoaster lately. Despite facing personal health challenges, her dedication shines through with her unwavering commitment to caring for others.

Nin has been grappling with a series of health setbacks. Headaches, double vision, and hearing troubles have accompanied her journey unexpectedly. However, characteristically, she has confronted each obstacle with unwavering resilience and a cheerful demeanour. It was only following some recent falls that doctors determined it was necessary to proceed with an MRI.

On 23rd May, the shocking news arrived that a tumour was discovered situated precariously between her hearing and facial nerves. It was a moment that rattled us all. The mere fact that Nin could walk and stand seemed miraculous. The tumour, identified as a Vestibular Schwannoma located in the left Cerebellopontine angle, poses significant challenges. While medical professionals believe the tumour isn't cancerous, it's still a Category 1 surgery scheduled for Monday, 17th June 2024. It's a little unexpected, but Nin's ready to take it all in stride.

The road ahead is daunting. The surgery, lasting a staggering 12 hours, will be performed either through Nin's ear or skull. This procedure poses the risk of 100% hearing loss in her left ear and possible permanent facial weakness. Until then, Nin has been instructed to refrain from work, driving, or being alone, with her partner Zac stepping in as her primary caregiver and provider.

Post-surgery, Nin faces an intensive recovery period, including time in the ICU, followed by a prolonged spell of recovery at home.

Despite these challenges, Nin's spirits remain high, buoyed by her friends and family's overwhelming love and support. She faces this journey with unwavering gratitude and a determination to emerge stronger.
