A MESSAGE FROM BEESY’s COO, MARIE HOLLOWELL:
“We will find a way to help them, I promise”…
These were the words spoken to me by my colleague, Vanja Dragutinovic, as I stood bent over sobbing in front of the van that would take us from the Ninós Felices orphanage back to our luxury hotel in Cabarete. Despite the games we played with these children, despite the momentary love exchanged, my heart knew it wasn’t enough; so did Vanja and so did our CEO, Elys Roberts. I couldn’t stand the idea of just leaving them there, knowing the history and perpetual cycles that created their world in the first place.
The reality is that a piece of me felt particularly sensitive to this issue because I had been adopted in infancy; but even in the absence of that, I know my experience would never compare to the immense hurdles standing in front of these kids and the future they deserve. The statistics say it all; “more than one million children in the Dominican Republic live in poverty and roughly 578,000 children under the age of 15 are without parental care. Around 20% of them are orphans” (SOS Children’s Villages). The vast majority of these children end up aging out of these group settings with minimal education. For young women, this often leads to particularly devastating circumstances of prostitution and exploitation.
So, we took action. Elys told the team we had to find a consistent means of giving back and putting power behind our words. While we know we cannot unilaterally save the world, the call to action on LinkedIn was not sufficient. So, here we go. BEESY Strategy has put together a GoFundMe page for the children of Ninós Felices with two primary goals in mind;
(1) prepare the older children for safety and success upon exiting and
(2) lay the groundwork for the younger children to cultivate a robust education and set of transferrable skills.
100% of the funds donated to our cause will be directed towards library books, school supplies, technology, English tutors, musical instruments, and various other resources central to empowering young people to achieve their full potential.
Let’s continue to put good in the world; to leave something better than what there is today.
