Hi everyone! As you all know, Ninja is our loving baby who goes everywhere and does everything with us. He is a spunky 3-year-old, with lots of energy and full of life. When he was 11 months, he was diagnosed with diabetes mellitus. We've had a long, rough road trying to get his diabetes managed. Vet after vet and specialist after specialist all noted that his case was far from textbook but no one could ever figure out why. So, after several tests, we thought it was finally under control. And it was under control for several months. But this past weekend, while in Mammoth, he became severely ill. He had become extremely deyhydrated, weak, and lethargic. We rushed him to the nearest emergency animal clinic, where he was put on an overnight IV treatment. We left Mammoth early the next morning in a race to get home so he could be treated by his usual vet. His vet ran some tests but ultimately was not able to treat him and transferred him to East Valley Emergency Clinic. By this time, his dehydration was getting worse, blood pressure was falling, and body temperature was dropping. Once Ninja made it to the clinic, the initial prognosis was that he wouldn't make it through the night. They immediately got him back on IV therapy and started a full panel of diagnostics to try to figure out what was causing this episode. Ninja barely survived the night. In the morning, he was transferred to California Veterinary Specialists in Ontario, CA, where he still is undergoing intensive treatment.
In the span of only 20 hours, Ninja went from his usual rambunctious self to fighting for his life. He is still in critical condition, dangerously dehydrated, very weak, and jaundice. They have diagnosed him with DKA, diabetic ketoacidosis, a life-threatening metabolic disorder associated with diabetes. They also believe he has another disease or condition that may be interferring with his diabetes but have not yet given him a diagnosis.
Please show your support for Ninja. Any amount would help us pay his medical bills. But if you donate at least $12, we will send you a Pet Diabetes Awareness bumper sticker with Ninja's picture on it and either a "Fight Like A Lion" or a "#DoleWhipLife" button. Please specify in the comments which of the two buttons you would like. A portion of your donation will go towards Ninja's fight and a portion will go to the Morris Animal Foundation.
Thank you!
