Hi, my name is Nina, and I’m a mother of three rebuilding our lives after leaving a domestic violence situation.

Earlier this year, I made the difficult but necessary decision to choose safety and stability for my children and myself. While many people saw pieces of this journey back in February, what hasn’t been visible is the ongoing legal, financial, and housing challenges that come after leaving — especially when children are involved.

Right now, I am navigating:

• Ongoing legal fees related to a Protection From Abuse (PFA) case

• The need for custody representation to protect my children’s well-being

• Emergency housing planning, including the possibility that I may be ordered to leave my current residence

• Rebuilding stability while continuing to care for and support my children

Legal support alone is costly. My current PFA attorney fee is $2,500, and custody attorneys charge hourly rates that add up quickly. In a prior custody matter, I spent over $16,000 in legal fees, only to walk away when it became clear my child’s safety could be compromised. I will not make that mistake again.

My upcoming court hearing is January 22, and the outcome could significantly impact our housing situation. I am doing everything I can to prepare — emotionally, legally, and financially — but I cannot do this alone.

• Stability needs for my children during this transition

I want to be clear: this is not about staying stuck in the past. This is about protecting my children, standing firm in my boundaries, and building a future rooted in safety and peace.
