In November 2020, Nina noticed a small lump in her neck that would not go away. She went to countless doctor visits and underwent a battery of tests including exams, blood draws, ultrasounds, and CT scans. During a CT scan, there was another mass that was incidentally found in her neck. After some inconclusive biopsies, the doctors finally decided to operate and Nina recently (January 15th) underwent surgery to remove the masses and adjacent lymph nodes. During surgery, Nina was diagnosed with nasopharyngeal carcinoma (cancer). A devastating diagnosis, especially at her young age while already being a busy mom to two lovely but rambunctious boys. There is a long uncertain road ahead that will likely include oncology visits, surgical follow-ups, pending pathology reports, treatment plans, radiation therapy, and more total body scans. We are hopeful and praying for good news and healing for Nina.

This has been an especially difficult time for Nina as her father passed away from metastatic urinary tract cancer almost exactly 1 year prior. We have all said colloquially that 2020 was the worst year ever. But I don't think anyone realizes that more than Nina and her family. The emotional and physical toll has surely been immense.

Those who know Nina know she is usually the first to offer help but the last to request it. She did not ask for this GoFundMe. But in knowing Nina, I know we have all been blessed by her friendship, her huge heart, and the kindness of her family. While Nina and her family are going through these difficult times, the last thing on her mind should be finances and how to afford current and future medical treatment.
